It looks like people many people are clearing out their spent garden plants, which is good. However, extra piles of trimmings have been left on the ground in front of the compost bins. We will get some more grinding done soon, but here are some things you can do instead of leaving plants on the ground in front of the bins.
- Please leave extra clippings in the field across from the compost bin towards the Railroad Avenue side. This year, please do not leave piles in the pollinator garden area.
- There is some concern about rotting vegetables attracting pests. Please remove vegatables from the plants you cut out and put the rotting vegetables in the green Recology yard waste carts so we won’t attract gophers, squirrels, and rats. Please do NOT put the actual whole plant in the yard waste cart because it fills up too fast and we need to compost more. Anything you put in the green yard waste cart should be chopped into small pieces.
- You can also chop up your plants and compost right in your plot. If you have a lot of rotting vegetables, Pat suggests digging a hole to bury them about 10 inches deep. That would be good for your soil.
Thanks for your help in keeping our garden tidy and keeping the pests out!
